NEW YORK | Farmingdale State men’s basketball swept through the postseason on their way to another NCAA Tournament appearance this week.
The top-seeded Rams are also heavily represented on the 2023-24 Skyline Conference all-conference team, sweeping Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year and Coach of the Year honors.
In voting conducted by the 12 Skyline head coaches, FSC senior guard/forward Nick Hurowitz (below) has been selected as Player of the Year, while teammates Corey Powell and Kentrell Evans have been tabbed Defensive Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year, respectively. Hurowitz’ head coach, Brendan Twomey, also gets the nod as Coach of the Year for a second time in his 11
th year at FSC.
Hurowitz is a one-time D3hoops.com Team of the Week selection and a three-time Skyline Player of the Week selection this winter. He is the only player in the conference to hold top-seven rankings in the following categories: three-point percentage (first, .405); scoring (third, 19.3); rebounding (fifth, 8.4); and field goal percentage (seventh, .491) – all while averaging just 28 minutes per outing for the conference champions in a season where he climbed to sixth on the Rams’ career scoring list.
Hurowitz and the Rams will now face Stevens this Friday in Virginia as the first round of the tournament opens up.
FSC is also anchored by Powell (below), who garnered back-to-back Most Outstanding Player of the conference tournament honors this past weekend after guiding the Rams past No. 2 Yeshiva, 87-68.
Powell, a senior and one-time Skyline Player of the Week selection this season, is No. 8 on the career scoring list for the Rams following another stellar campaign. He ranks second in the Skyline in field goal percentage (.530), and pulls down 4.5 boards per game for a Rams team that tops the nation in rebounding margin (plus-12.9). But Powell is known for his defensive prowess. Defensively, he consistently guards the opposition's top perimeter option in FSC's predominant man-to-man scheme that ranks No. 2 in the Skyline in both field goal percentage defense (.399) and three-point field goal percentage defense (.307).
Evans (below) won four of the last six Skyline Rookie of the Week awards to cap the regular season. Coming into conference tourney play, he ranked second on FSC with 6.2 rebounds per game. His 0.8 blocks per game average is the 10th-best mark in the Skyline. Evans also shot .621 (64 of 103) from the field in the regular season, and has posted his marks while playing an average of 15 minutes per night and just entering the regular starting rotation after the new year.
Twomey (below) wins his second Skyline Coach of the Year as the Rams went 26-2 overall and 15-1 in Skyline play, highlighted by a 17-game win streak. He previously won the honor in 2015-16.
Twomey is also no stranger to Skyline hardware as a player. A graduate of Mount Saint Mary College in 2004 with a degree in business administration, Twomey was inducted to the Athletics Hall of Fame in April 2013. Serving as a team captain his junior and senior seasons, Twomey became the All-Time leading scorer at Mount Saint Mary while finishing fifth All-Time in Division III in 3-pointers made (362) and 12th All-Time in 3-pointers per game (3.32).
Behind Twomey, the Knights went 58-29 during his three years on campus; and in 2002-03 Mount Saint Mary went 23-8, which stood as the program's best record in school history until 2011-12. Twomey was named a three-time First Team All-Conference member in the Skyline and was named the Skyline Player of the Year as a senior in the 2003-04 campaign.
As a coach, Twomey’s combo of Hurowitz and Powell headline the First Team, and are joined by YU’s Zevi Samet and Manhattanville’s Tommy Lotito – last year’s Rookie of the Year and Player of the Year, respectively. The duo both return to the First Team in 2023-24. Maritime’s Jake Murphy, who guided the Privateers to the playoffs, rounds out the First Team.
The Second Team consists of FSC’s Aaron Davis, Mount Saint Vincent’s Joshua Cabezudo, Sarah Lawrence’s Eamon Kelly, St. Joseph’s-Long Island’s Alec Tabada and U.S. Merchant Marine Academy’s Drew Zalescik – all of which were featured standout players in this season’s conference tournament.
