NEW YORK | Yeshiva University men's basketball star Ryan Turell has been selected as a 2023 Jay Fiedler Outstanding Jewish College Athlete of the Year. He becomes the second player in program history to earn this honor. Teammate Gabriel Leifer earned Jay Fiedler Outstanding Jewish College Athlete of the Year accolades in 2021. here. Skyler Schork, a rower from the U.S. Naval Academy, was also honored as a 2023 Jay Fiedler Outstanding Jewish College Athlete of the Year.
The awards will be presented at the Fifth Annual Jewish Sports Heritage Association Induction Ceremony to be held on Sunday morning April 23, 2023, at Temple Israel, Lawrence.

This year, Turell was selected as the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) National Player of the Year, became a three-time D3hoops.com First Team All-America honoree, an NABC All-America first team recipient, the D3hoops.com Region 3 Player of the Year, a finalist for the Bevo Francis Award, and the NABC District 3 Player of the Year. Turell earned his second straight Skyline Player of the Year honor while being named to the All-Skyline first team for the third time in his outstanding career. Turell earned the prestigious Travis Grant Award by leading all three NCAA divisions with 27.1 points per game this past season.
During his time at YU, Turell helped lead the Maccabees to a pair of Skyline Conference Championships, two victories in the 2019-20 NCAA Tournament, a No. 1 national ranking in the D3hoops.com Men's Top 25 National Poll, and a 50-game winning streak from 2019 until 2021.
Turell finishes his illustrious career at YU with a school all-time best 2,158 career points. This year, he set the school's all-time single season-scoring record with 786 points, while shooting 58.7% from the field and 46.8% from deep. The three-time Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association Player of the Year scored at least 20 points in 25 out of 29 games played in 2021-22 and netted at least 30 points nine times during the season. He scored a program all-time single-game best 51 points during YU's victory over Manhattanville College, back on November 28, 2021.
