Skyline Women’s Lacrosse All-Conference Honors Announced

Jessie Wohner - Merchant Marine

The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy dominated the Skyline Conference postseason awards.

In all, 11 Mariners received individual honors, including Offensive Player of the Year Jessie Wohner, Defensive Player of the Year Maddie Schmidt, and Coach of the Year Kyle Simensky. Maritime’s Gabrielle Nicolosi was named the conference’s Rookie of the Year.

Wohner, a senior from Norfolk, Va., was an offensive force for the Mariners. Her 43 goals in conference play were 18 more than Alicia Rodriguez’s 25. Her 24 assists led the league by seven and her 67 points were 32 more than second-place Megan Diamond’s 35. Wohner also led the league with 73 shots.

What Wohner was to the Mariners’ offense, Schmidt was to their defense. The senior from Mechanicsville, Va., had 20 grounds balls, caused 24 turnovers, and had 37 draw controls in Skyline Conference games.

Nicolosi, a freshman attack from West Islip, N.Y., finished her rookie season with 19 goals and 11 assists for 30 Skyline Conference points, which ranked fourth in the league.

In his 10th season, Simensky led USMMA to the regular season Skyline championship with an 11-2 record, five games better than second place. He then led the Mariners to the tournament title with a 15-2 win over Farmingdale to garner the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
