BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Polytechnic Institute of NYU rallied for an 8-7 victory over Farmingdale State College in eight innings, capturing its first Skyline Conference title and earning the first NCAA bid in program history. Freshman first baseman Corinne Fitzgibbons was selected as the tournament's Most Valuable Player.
NYU-Poly (31-9) entered Sunday's action unbeaten in the double-elimination tournament and needing only one win to capture the title. But Farmingdale State pushed the Fighting Blue Jays to the limit by winning the opening game 11-0. Sophomore pitcher Hope Zino shut down the NYU-Poly offense while junior shortstop Nicole Farber homered twice to supply the offense.
NYU-Poly rebounded in the second game which featured four lead changes. The Fighting Blue Jays trailed 4-3 after four innings and 6-4 after six innings. Trailing by a run entering the bottom of the seventh inning, NYU-Poly used a leadoff double, a sacrifice bunt and a base hit to tie the game at 7-7 and force extra innings.
Farmingdale State had runners on first and third with no outs in the top of the eighth, but was unable to push across the go-ahead run.
In the bottom of the eighth, the NCAA tie-breaker rule placed a runner on second base. Farmingdale State elected to intentionally walk Fitzgibbons, putting runners on first and second with no outs. Following a sacrifice bunt, NYU-Poly singled home the game-winning run, capturing the championship.
