Skyline Restores Presidents Cup; Merchant Marine Collects Third Trophy

NEW YORK | Following a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Skyline Conference restarts its annual Presidents Cup, announcing the United States Merchant Marine Academy as winner of the 2021-22 distinction.

USMMA previously won back-to-back cups in 2018 and 2019, when the award was last presented. Farmingdale State placed second. Manhattanville College third.

The award measures all-sports excellence in league competition. A school earns points toward the Presidents Cup based upon the conference finish in each sport in which it competes.

The Mariners won a league-best six Skyline titles: women's volleyball, men's cross country, men's and women's swimming and diving, women's lacrosse and men's outdoor track and field. Consequently, USMMA collected a rating percentage of .863 (103.5 out of a possible 120 points).

Farmingdale State (.823) is the runner up after winning four championships (golf, women's soccer, softball and women's outdoor track and field), while Manhattanville (.740 - men's tennis champions) completes the top three. St. Joseph's-Long Island, which won three conference crowns, finishes fourth in the standings.

For each sport, the maximum number of points an institution can earn is equal to the number of teams competing in that sport. For sports with regular-season and conference tournament play, a school receives points based upon an average of the regular-season and conference tournament finishes. For sports with only conference championships, the finish in the championship determines the Presidents Cup points. An overall rating is generated for each school which is a percentage of total points earned divided by total possible points for that member school.

"Our institutions have shown a tremendous amount of resilience, navigating challenging times in the best interest of their student-athletes," said Skyline Conference Commissioner Linda Bruno. "We appreciate all of their efforts, and congratulate USMMA on another banner year."

The Skyline Conference is a college athletic conference based in the New York City area that competes in the NCAA's Division III. The 12-member league was originally chartered on May 16, 1989, as a men's basketball conference and now sponsors 19 sports (10 for men and nine for women).
