NEW YORK | Votes are in!
The Skyline Conference head swimming and diving coaches cast their predictions for the 2022-23 campaign. And the men's and women's programs from the United States Merchant Marine Academy are both favorites to capture the conference crowns on Jan. 28-29, 2023 at Purchase College.
Head coach Sean Tedesco's Mariners received three first-place votes on the men’s side and four first-place votes in the tally on the women’s side (coaches were not permitted to vote for their own team) after sweeping the conference hardware yet again last season.
The USMMA men's swimming & diving team were conference champions for the 23rd-straight season (20th under Tedesco), as they claimed their fifth-straight Skyline title last winter. The Mariners won all but two events at the championship meet on the men’s side and finished with 893 points, well ahead of second-place SUNY Maritime, which produced 162.5 points.
The Merchant Marine Academy women captured their fifth-straight league crown, too, winning all but one event over the two-day meet hosted by Purchase. The Mariners earned 875 points; with the next closest team, second-place Sarah Lawrence, finishing with 206 points.
On the men's side, SUNY Maritime College, now under new head coach Jim Downey, narrowly placed second in this year’s preseason tally, followed by: Mount Saint Mary College; Purchase College, SUNY; and Sarah Lawrence College. Maritime, the perceived biggest threat to the Mariners’ championship reign, received two first-place votes in the poll. The Privateers also finished just one-point back of USMMA in the tally.
Meantime, Sarah Lawrence and Maritime each earned one first-place vote on the women’s side, followed by St. Joseph's-Long Island, Mount Saint Mary and Purchase, respectively.
