NEW YORK | The Skyline Conference's eight head men's lacrosse coaches have spoken in the latest edition of the all-conference team, selecting Manhattanville's Nick Cornelia and Farmingdale State's Rob Varello as Co-Offensive Player of the Year, and Maritime's Matthew Weigand as Defensive Player of the Year.
U.S. Merchant Marine Academy standout attacker Owen Barcus was tabbed as Rookie of the Year following a stellar freshman campaign that was highlighted by a Skyline Conference championship.
Maritime's Justin Manjares has been named Coach of the Year by his peers for a third time after leading the Privateers to a fourth straight conference final.
Cornelia (above) finished the regular season strong. He erupted for 12 points across a pair of contests as the Valiants went 2-0 in the final week, earning him Skyline Player of the Week honors. He scored a team-high five goals, while adding one assist and one ground ball to his totals in a 23-8 victory over Mount Saint Vincent. The grad student attacker then scored another five goals against Purchase, where he tallied five ground balls, two caused turnovers, and one assist in a 14-8 win over the Panthers. In April, he joined the 100 goal club while the Valiants earned their first conference win of the season against St. Joseph's-Long Island. With a pair of goals in the first half of that matchup, Cornelia became the eighth player in program history to reach the century mark.
Varello (below) was equally impressive offensively for the Rams. The senior finished the regular season as the Skyline's leader in conference play with 5.17 points per game. In just 14 games played, he tied a career-high with eight man-up goals – tied for tops in the Skyline – and ranks No. 36 nationally. Varello averaged 8.33 points per game over the final three games of the season, ranking No. 84 and 90 nationally in goals and points per game, respectively. He was named Offensive Player of the Week once during the season.

Weigand (below) covered all the top attackman for the regular-season champion Privateers. In Maritime's non-conference schedule, he held Stockton's All-American attackman to zero goals and zero assists; Stevens Tech's All-American to one assist; Coast Guard's All-American to two goals and two Assists; and Wesleyan's attackman to two goals and two assists. During the season, the grad student was named Defensive Player of the Week twice, helping to lead the three-time defending champion Privateers back to the championship final.

Barcus (below) was a three-time Skyline Rookie of the Week, who finished seventh in goals per game in conference play (2.62), fourth in shots per game (9.08) and led the Mariners in shots on goal (75) during the regular season. He recorded 40 points, 34 goals, six assists, 26 ground balls, eight caused turnovers and one game winner as USMMA entered the postseason as the No. 2 seed on its way to upending Maritime in the championship. Barcus and the Mariners are now off to Maryland for the NCAAs.
Weigand's mentor earns the distinction as Coach of the Year. Manjares (below), who won the award in 2019 and 2021 after guiding the Privateers to conference titles, takes home the honor once again in his fifth season at the helm. The Dix Hills, N.Y., native has five players on the first team. The first team is also highlighted by a conference-best six student-athletes from USMMA.
The second team is led by Barcus and highlighted by another 15 standout student-athletes.
