2022 Skyline Conference Men’s Volleyball Awards Announced

Playerof the Year Paul Curaro
Skyline Conference champion St. Joseph’s-Long Island earned three season awards while league runner-up New Jersey City claimed another to highlight the 2022 Skyline Conference men’s volleyball honors.

St. Joseph’s-Long Island grad student outside hitter Paul Curaro was named the league’s Player of the Year while teammate and classmate right side Mark Jensen garnered Rookie of the Year laurels. Golden Eagles’ head coach Bill Kropp shared the Skyline Coach of the Year award with New Jersey City’s Carlo Edra.

Skyline Conference season awards, as well as the All-Conference teams, were determined by a vote of the league’s head coaches.

Curaro, a three-time Player of the Week this season, ranks among the Skyline leaders in several league statistical categories, including service aces (0.86, 1st), kills (323, 2nd ), kills average (3.71, 3rd), and hitting percentage (.310, 5th).

Jensen ranks second in league stats in hitting percentage (.402) and fifth in kills average (3.31). He was named Rookie of the Week a remarkable five times and Player of the Week once and earned a spot on the All-Conference first-team.

Kropp and Edra share Coach of the Year laurels. Kropp guided St. Joseph’s-Long Island to a perfect 13-0 record in league play while posting an overall mark of 25-3. The Golden Eagles entered this past weekend’s championship as the No. 1 seed and held true to that, earning a 3-0 win over Sarah Lawrence and a 3-2 win over second-seeded New Jersey City to capture the Skyline’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. He is in his sixth season as the Golden Eagles’ head coach.

Edra, who won the Coach of the Year award last season, is in the third season of his second stint at the helm of the Gothic Knights. He previously served as part-time coach from 2008-11 and returned in October of 2019 on a full-time basis. This season, he led NJCU to an 11-3 Skyline record and the second seed in the championship. The Gothic Knights are 21-7 overall.
