USMMA Edges Champ FSC in Preseason Poll; Picked No. 1 in Women’s Lax Rankings

NEW YORK | United States Merchant Marine Academ's championship form is projected to bounce back in 2025.

The Skyline Conference's nine head women's lacrosse coaches have voted on their latest preseason coaches poll, selecting the Mariners as the projected No. 1 heading into the spring campaign.

USMMA, which entered last season as the top choice, too, narrowly fell in the conference semifinals to Maritime. The Mariners were searching for a third straight title before coming up short, 13-12, in the semis.

The Privateers would go on to lose by a slim margin themselves, 13-10, to eventual champion Farmingdale State (below) in the final.

Flash forward to now and the three programs headline the projections coming into 2025, with USMMA garnering 59 total points and four of the possible nine first-place votes (institutions are not permitted to vote for their own team). The defending champion Rams follow right behind in second  with 56 points, but secured five first-place votes in the process as coaches appear split on the two teams vying for the top spot in 2025. Maritime is third with 48 points.

St. Joseph’s-Long Island (45) and Manhattanville (38) complete the top five teams, while Mount Saint Mary (33) comes in sixth in the projected field of six playoff teams. Mount Saint Vincent, Purchase and Old Westbury round out the poll, respectively.

The six-team 2025 Skyline Conference Women's Lacrosse Championship starts at home sites, with first-round action on April 28 and semifinals matchups following on May 1. The championship final takes place at the highest remaining seed on May 3, with the champion receiving the Skyline's automatic bid to the 2025 NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Championship.
