HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. - Third-seeded St. Joseph's College overcame an early deficit to earn a 3-2 win over second-seeded Centenary College in the semifinals of the Skyline Conference women's soccer tournament on Wednesday at Cyclone Field.
St. Joseph's advances to the championship game where it will face top-seeded Stevens on Saturday at 1 p.m. at DeBaun Field in Hoboken, N.J. Stevens cruised to an 8-0 win over over fourth seeded Farmingdale State in the other semifinal game.
Centenary took a quick lead as freshman Claire Johnson (Morris Plains, N.J./Morristown) converted a pass from junior Jess Sikora (Ogdensburg, N.J./Walkill Valley) in the game's first minute of play. The Lady Cyclones held the advantage until the 21st minute when St. Joseph's Justine Salpietro (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) scored unassisted to knot the game at 1-1. Over the course of the next 40 minutes of play, St. Joseph's controlled possession, ultimately out shooting Centenary 22-9 for the game. During that stretch Centenary goalkeeper Krystal McCullen (South Plainfield/South Plainfield) made a number saves in order to keep the game tied at 1-1.
The Golden Eagles received a lift from freshman Jessica Ragazzi (Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) who came off the bench to score twice within a seven minute span, to give St. Joseph's a 3-1 lead. Ragazzi’s first goal came on an unassisted run through the defense with the second coming off a cross from Francine DeJosia (Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford).
The second-seeded Lady Cyclones did not go away without a fight as their leading scorer Jess Sikora scored with less than 10 minutes remaining. Centenary threatened in the final moments but was unable to convert on a pair of scoring chances.
