United States Merchant Marine Academy freshman Jess LaValley had an impressive debut to her collegiate pitching career. In seven games in Florida, LaValley surrendered just four earned runs in 33.0 innings (0.84 earned run average) while striking out 47 batters (9.97 per game). Her top performance was a three-hit shutout with 11 strikeouts against Husson in the Mariners’ final game of their trip. LaValley also struck out 12 batters while walking just one in a victory over Heidelberg.
