2017-18 Scholar-Athletes of the Year Announced

NEW YORK | The following 19 student-athletes have been named the 2017-18 Skyline Conference Scholar-Athletes of the Year in their respective sports:

  • Men's Lacrosse: James Fitzgerald, Mount Saint Vincent
  • Women's Lacrosse: Morgan Cordes, Mount Saint Mary
  • Men's Soccer: Jorey Garcia, Old Westbury
  • Women's Soccer: Bridget McKeever, Mount Saint Mary
  • Softball: Rachel Heizer, Mount Saint Vincent
  • Men's Swimming and Diving: Christopher Kahl, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy

A Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award is presented to the first-team All-Conference performer who carries the highest grade point average (minimum 3.30) for the semester in which the student-athlete competes. In the sports of basketball and swimming and diving, the highest cumulative grade point average (minimum 3.30) for both the fall and spring semesters of 2017-18 was used.

Raab was the Skyline Conference Baseball Rookie of the Year and an ABCA All-New York Region second-team selection after going 7-3 on the hill with a 1.93 ERA and 77 strikeouts in 70 innings pitched.

Halpert was the Most Outstanding Player of the conference's men's basketball championship and to the All-Met second team after sending the Maccabees to their first title in program history. He scored at a 20.7 points per game clip and shot .432 from 3-point range.

Renker, a second-team all-region choice by D3hoops.com and the Skyline championship's Most Outstanding Player, sent the Panthers to their second conference crown in three seasons after averaging 14.7 points and 12.6 rebounds per game while blocking 62 shots.

Bates placed fifth at the 2017 Skyline Conference Men's Cross Country Championship, completing the 8k loop at Purchase College in a time of 27:44.84.

MacDonell finished second at the conference championship held at Purchase College, registering a time of 24:24.73 on the 6,000-meter course.

Legg placed third at the 2017 Skyline Conference Golf Championship at Bethpage State Park's Red Course, posting a plus-8 score of 148 over 36 holes on the par-70 course.

Fitzgerald rounded out his time with the Dolphins by causing a conference-high 2.62 turnovers per game (34, in 13 contests), while collecting 4.38 ground balls per outing.

Cordes helped the Knights to a semifinal appearance in the conference's women's lacrosse championship by registering 34 ground balls, 16 caused turnovers and 25 draw controls.

Garcia opened his collegiate career by topping the Skyline with 2.11 points per game (16 g, 6 a, 38 pts. in 18 gp).

McKeever, the Skyline's Defensive Player of the Year in women's soccer, helped the Knights defense to a conference-best 0.76 goals against average while contributing 16 goals and 11 assists on the offensive end of the field.

Heizer, the two-time softball Player of the Year in the conference, hit .426 with a conference-high 30 RBI and 16 doubles.

Kahl won both the 100 (53.77) and 200 (1:55.88) yard backstroke swims at the 2018 conference championship, while also competing on the victorious 200 medley relay squad for the Mariners.

Lou touched the wall victorious in the 200 yard individual medley (2:18.00) at the 2018 conference championships, and swam on the winning 200 yard medley relay team.

Ozery posted an 8-4 record in singles play for the conference-champion Maccabees, including a 6-2 record at the No. 2 flight and a 4-0 mark in regular-season Skyline action.

Hava was the conference's Player of the Year after the Macs captured the program's first-ever conference title and berth to the NCAA championships. She went 9-0 at No. 1 singles for YU.

Georgiev won the 100 meter dash (11.24) at the inaugural Skyline Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championship, while also running on the Rams' victorious 4x100 and 4x400 meter relay sides.

Magoulas kicked off her inaugural outdoor campaign by winning the Skyline championship's hammer throw event with a toss of 37.94m (124-6).

Jones set the Golden Eagles to their first Skyline men's volleyball title and NCAA appearance, leading the conference with an average of 9.12 assists per set.

Urizzo registered 2.67 points per set for the Golden Eagles, while adding 27 total blocks and 256 digs (2.78 per set) for the Skyline semifinalists.
