NEW YORK – The Skyline Conference has announced its 2016-17 men’s basketball all-conference teams, and Old Westbury senior guard Jamail Stanley has been tabbed as Player of the Year in voting conducted by the conference’s 12 head coaches.
 
The coaches also selected Farmingdale State senior forward Weldon Irvine as Defensive Player of the Year, and Yeshiva University’s Simcha Halpert and Elliot Steinmetz as Rookie and Coach of the Year, respectively.
 
Stanley (Syracuse, N.Y.) repeats as Skyline Player of the Year after capturing the conference’s Player of the Week award six times in 2016-17. He scored 1,140 points in his two seasons at Old Westbury, and holds top-50 NCAA Division III national rankings this year in: double-doubles (19 – 6th); rebounding (12.2 rpg – 9th); scoring (22.4 ppg – 14th); steals (2.46 spg – 22nd); and blocked shots (2.12 bpg – 37th).
 
Irvine (Queens, N.Y.) helped the Rams to the conference championship after serving as team captain on a defense that ranks No. 6 in Division III in rebounding (45.0 rpg), No. 8 in field-goal percentage defense (.383) and No. 38 in rebounding margin (plus-6.0). He led FSC with 9.8 rebounds per game (including a 10.4 rpg average in conference play) while swatting away 24 shots through Saturday’s (Feb. 25) conference final.


 
A four-time Skyline Conference Rookie of the Week selection, Halpert (Los Angeles, Calif.) ranked second in scoring (13.0 ppg) on a Maccabees squad that advanced to their third-consecutive Skyline Conference Championship appearance. He shot .449 (102-of-227) from the floor and .382 (58-for-152) from 3-point range, while adding 24 steals and 12 blocked shots on the defensive side of the ball.


 
Steinmetz (Yeshiva, ’02) just wrapped up his third season at the helm of his alma mater, and has led the Maccabees to Skyline Conference Championship appearances in each of those campaigns. This season, he guided YU to a 15-10 record, including an 11-5 mark in conference action. Steinmetz has coached a trio of Skyline all-conference performers during that time, as well as Halpert’s aforementioned Rookie of the Year distinction this season.


 
Joining Stanley on the all-conference first-team are: Judah Cohen of Yeshiva; Andy Laurent of St. Joseph’s-Long Island; Patrick MacDonald of Maritime; Marcus Patterson of Sage; and George Riefenstahl of Farmingdale State.
 
The all-conference second-team consists of: Brian Berrios and Deshawn Cann of Purchase; Ali Mableton of Farmingdale State; Matt Miller of U.S. Merchant Marine Academy; and Gerard Nocera of Mount Saint Mary.
