PURCHASE, N.Y. - The United States Merchant Marine Academy swept its way to the 2017 Skyline Conference Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving titles Friday and Saturday (Jan. 27-28) at the Purchase College Natatorium.
Led by Men's Swimmer and Rookie of the Year Nolan Monahan, the Mariners' men's side scored 773 points on the weekend, while the women's squad topped the nine-team field with 483.5 points.
Monahan swam to a meet-record time of 1:46.13 in the 200-yard freestyle, while also notching meet records as a member of the 200-yard medley (1:36.19) and 400-yard freestyle (3:15.55) relay teams. He added individual victories along the way in the 50 Free (22.13) and 100 Free (47.62), as well.
On the women's side, Mount Saint Mary College sophomore Harley Illingworth was named Swimmer of the Year after capturing in the 200 Back (2:10.98), 200 IM (2:16.16) and 1000 Free (meet-record 10:42.27).
Sarah Lawrence College freshman Naima Mackrel secured Rookie of the Year praise, and her weekend included a meet-record time of 1:00.55 in the 100-yard backstroke.
Sarah Lawrence's Eric Mitchell and St. Joseph's-Long Island's Stephanie Palmeri received Men's and Women's Coach of the Year awards, respectively, in a vote by their peers.
First-place finishers are named to the all-conference first-team, while second-place finishers collect second-team praise.
