Mount Saint Mary powers past Bard en route to Skyline Conference Women's Tennis Championship

NEWBURGH, N.Y. - Mount Saint Mary College capped a perfect fall season with a 5-0 win over Bard College in the Skyline Conference women's tennis championship match on Friday evening at Cronomer Hill Park.  With the win, the Blue Knights finished 17-0 for the second time in three seasons.  In addition, Mount Saint Mary became the first Skyline women's tennis team to earn a bid to the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championship.

The NCAA Women's Tennis Championship begins on May 14, 2010.

The Blue Knights took control of the match from the outset, sweeping all three doubles matches by identical 8-2 scores.  Freshman Gabriela Murphy-Goldberg and sophomore Annmarie Llewellyn earned the first point with a win at first doubles.  Senior Caitlin Giordano and freshman Emily Gregory, playing together for just the second time, picked up the second point with a win at third doubles.  Juniors Lindsay Searle and Rebecca Schwartz closed out doubles play with a win at second doubles.

Searle brought Mount Saint Mary to within a point of the championship with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Khana Itkis at second singles.  Murphy-Goldberg then clinched the title, finishing off Sofia Commito, 6-0, 6-2 at first singles.  The freshman finished her fall season with a dual-match record of 15-1, leading all Skyline Conference players in singles victories.

Mount Saint Mary was in complete command of the match.  Schwartz, Searle, Jennifer Gregory and Emily Gregory were all leading in singles play when Murphy-Goldberg clinched the deciding point.

Bard, which won the Skyline Conference title in 2008, finished its season with a record of 8-4.  Two of the Raptors' losses came to Mount Saint Mary.
