Maritime captures first Skyline Conference Swimming Championship

2007-08 Skyline Conference Swimming Championship Results

PURCHASE, N.Y. - Maritime College captured eight individual events and both relays and cruised to its first Skyline Conference Men's Swimming Championship title.  Four different Privateer swimmers captured two individual events apiece.

As a team, Maritime compiled 168 team points.  Mount Saint Mary finished second with 115 points and Old Westbury placed third with 34 points.  Maritime won 10 of 14 events while Mount Saint Mary captured four.

Mount Saint Mary College senior Matt Peters earned Skyline Conference Swimmer of the Year honors after recording two first-place finishes and one second-place finish at the championship.  Peters was victorious in the 200-yard freestyle (1:55.95) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:08.87).  He also finished second in the 50-yard freestyle (23.70).

Maritime College freshman Brian Day earned Rookie of the Year honors by capturing both distance freestyle events.  Day won the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:21.28) and also came from behind in the final lap to win the 500-yard freestyle in 5:21.33.  He was also part of the winning 400-yard freestyle relay team.

Maritime also received two individual victories each from David O'Dougherty (100-back, 200-IM), Thomas Williams (100-breast, 200-breast) and Karl Fisher (50-free, 100-free).

Maritime College head coach Peter Vecchio was named Skyline Coach of the Year in Men's Swimming after leading the Privateers to their first Skyline swimming title.  Maritime also received the Team Sportsmanship Award for outstanding sportsmanship.

Five meet records were establish in the new format.  The 1,000-freestyle, 200-butterfly, 200-backstroke, 200-breaststroke and 400-freestyle relay were contested at the Skyline Championship for the first time, replacing shorter events.
