Bard College freshman Sofia Commito was selected as Rookie of the Year. Second-year Sage head coach Cedric Gaddis earned Coach of the Year honors.
Gray, who competes at first singles and first doubles for the Gators, compiled a record of 11-1 in both singles and doubles play. Gray lost her first singles match of the season, a non-conference match, and then won her next 11 matches without dropping a set. She was a perfect 9-0 against Skyline Conference opponents while dropping a total of just 11 games in those nine matches. Gray also teamed with sophomore Kathryn Saulsbery to capture the Skyline Conference Women’s Tennis Doubles Championship.
Commito, who went 9-2 at first singles and 7-4 at first doubles, was earned Skyline Conference Player of the Week honors once and Rookie of the Week honors twice during the season. She went 7-2 against Skyline Conference opponents, with her only losses coming against Gray and Oshea Davis of Farmingdale State. Commito went 7-2 at first doubles while teaming with senior Chelsea Herman. She was the only freshman in the conference to compete at first singles.
In addition to earning Skyline Conference Rookie of the Year honors, Commito was also selected as the Most Valuable Player in helping Bard College to its first Skyline women’s tennis title. In the Raptors’ three Skyline tournament matches, Commito went 3-0 at first singles and 2-1 at first doubles. In doubles play, she teamed with Chelsea Herman for victories in the quarterfinals and semifinals against Purchase and St. Joseph’s respectively. In singles, Commito earned straight-sets victories in all three rounds. In the championship match against Mount Saint Mary, her 6-2, 6-1 victory helped Bard overcome a 3-1 deficit en route to a 6-3 victory.
Gaddis was selected as the Skyline Conference Women’s Tennis Coach of the Year by his peers. Gaddis directed the Gators to a 10-5 overall record, including a 6-2 record in Skyline Conference play, good for third place. In addition, Sage advanced to the semifinals of the Skyline Conference Championship. The 10-5 record was an improvement of six wins from the 2007 season in which the Gators went 4-10 and finished sixth in the conference standings. With just one senior among his top six singles players, Gaddis’ team is poised to continue its ascent in the Skyline standings.
The Sage Colleges also earned the Skyline Conference's Team Sportsmanship Award in women's tennis for an outstanding display of sportsmanship throughout the season.
