EAST MEADOW, N.Y. - With 23 top-20 performances, the United States Merchant Marine Academy men’s swimming and diving team swam its way to a 6th place finish at the ECAC Championships, totaling 232 points, the men finished 6th out of 16 teams.
All five relay teams finished with Top-10 performances. The 200-yard medley relay team opened the meet on Friday evening with a fourth place time of 1:38.96. The Mariner squad of Scott Pearson, Jay Carpenter, Jesse Bowser and Will Ansell, beat out the Skyline’s Stevens Tech by seven places. New York University, The College of New Jersey and Springfield finished in the top-3 with times of 1:36.73, 1:36.97 and 1:37.10 respectively.
Following suit, the men’s 200-yard freestyle relay team of Carpenter, freshman Stephen Ingvolstad, Ansell and Scott Heilman also finished with a fourth place time of 1:28.74. The Mariners were out swum by teams from NYU, SUNY Geneseo and TCNJ with times of 1:25.93, 1:26.09 and 1:27.17.
The 400-yard medley relay also marked in the Top-5 with a fifth place swim time of 3:41.33. Competing in this race was Pearson, Carpenter, Matt Ellison and Ingvolstad.
The 400-yard and 800-yard freestyle relay teams finished sixth and seventh respectively in their events. With a time of 3:16.97, Ellison, Carpenter, Ingvolstad and Ansell came in sixth place and Ingvoldstad, David Scarberry, Heilman and John Murphy finished seventh for the Mariners with a time of 7:31.72.
In addition to competing in three of the top-10 relay teams, Ingvolstad also had high marks in his individual events. He earned a ninth place finish in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 48.06, a 14th place finish in the 100-yard backstroke event with a time of 56.76. Pearson finished seven spots after him with a 21st place finish at a time of 57.60, two tenths of a second away from a top-20 time.
Ingvolstad also finished 15th in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 54.71 and 16th in the 50-yard freestyle sprint with a time of 22.28.
Also earning high marks individually was Carpenter. A key part of four of the relay teams, the junior also earned two individual Top-15 times. Carpenter earned a ninth place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke competition with a time of 2:17.59; and a 15th place finish in the 100-yard freestyle competition with a time of 48.56, six spots and five tenths of second behind Ingvolstad.
Also earning points for the Mariners in individual events was Ellison who had three individual Top-20 swims. He finished 11th in the 200-yard butterfly event, 13th in the 100-yard fly and 20th in the 500-yard freestyle event.
Scarberry also placed Top-10 in two individual events. He placed ninth in the 1650-yard freestyle swim with a time of 17:31.42 and 17th, three spots in front of Ellison, in the 500-yard freestyle event with a time of 5:09.26.
In the diving events, Justin Adams finished 11th off the 3-meter and 1-meter boards with scores of 246.35 and 190.95 respectively, earning 12 points individually.
